Though there are many ways to include everyone in class, they often fit into seven groups.

Make Friends with Your Students

Making friends with each student is important for a classroom where everyone feels welcome. Teachers always try to learn about their students’ different backgrounds and viewpoints in these classrooms. They also give students chances to talk about their lives and what they think with their classmates in a safe way. When teachers take the time to understand each student and respect where they come from, it makes the classroom a safe place to learn. It also helps everyone, both teachers and students learn more about different cultures and backgrounds.

Know How Your Students Learn

In an inclusive classroom, students also get to do fun things that help them think in new ways. Teachers encourage them to try new ideas and not worry if they make mistakes while solving problems.

Encourage Students to Talk and Play Together

When students talk and spend timе togеthеr, it makes thе class morе wеlcoming and hеlps studеnts fееl morе connected to their school.  Tеachеrs can do lots of things to gеt students interacting.  At the beginning of thе school year, they can play games that help еvеryonе gеt to know еach othеr.  Also, teachers can changе where students sit in class a few times during thе yеar so еvеryonе gеts to know different classmates.  Doing projects in groups and mixing up who works together during the year helps students interact more. For younger kids, having structured games during recess makes it fun for everyone and helps kids who might feel left out during playtime.

Give Extra Help When Needed

Making a classroom inclusive means offering different kinds of help to all students and their families. Some students might need extra help with their studies, like tutoring. Teachers can set up times outside of class, called office hours, where students can ask questions without feeling nervous in front of others. Regular meetings between teachers and students’ families is another way to discuss where a student might need more help. Sometimes, students or families might feel shy about asking for help, so teachers and schools need to tell everyone what help is available. Being open to talking and understanding the needs of students and families helps make a friendly place where everyone can get the help they need.
